Common questions about chiropractic treatment, holistic health, and Dr. Meadow’s practice and policies.

Does chiropractic hurt?

Chiropractic treatment is usually painless. Some patients are fearful as a result of seeing the exaggerated versions of manipulations shown in some movies, TV shows, etc. They get over this very quickly because, in fact, most treatments are relatively low-impact and benign.

What should I expect on my first visit?

Dr. Meadow will take a thorough case history and will perform a physical exam focusing on your issue. This will take 15-30 minutes. He will determine whether chiropractic can be of help to you and, if appropriate, will give you your first treatment.

How quickly will I see results?

This varies greatly. Some people feel immediate relief, while others feel little change for the first few treatments. Generally you will know that chiropractic is useful for you within 3-5 treatments over the first 2 or 3 weeks.

I am told that once you see a chiropractor you have to keep going. Is this true?

Of course this is entirely up to you. Some patients are happy with just a few treatments and stop there. Due to the chronic nature of many back problems, some people find that an occasional maintenance visit to their chiropractor keeps them feeling their best.

What is the danger of chiropractic treatment?

There are very few bad outcomes with chiropractic. Of course, any time you treat the human body, unwanted results can occur. That said, the malpractice premiums for chiropractors are generally less than 5% of what orthopedic surgeons pay.

What about using medications for my back pain?

Of course, there are times when medications are useful. Anti-inflammatory pills such as ibuprofen and analgesics such as acetaminophen can help you get through the most acute phase of a bad back episode. However, they do not address the mechanical source of the problem. Chiropractic does this by restoring normal mobility to the spinal joints.

Will my insurance cover treatment in your office?

We do accept all major insurance plans. Most do cover chiropractic. Our office will be happy to call your company and find out what your coverage is.

Will my insurance cover massage therapy?

We will bill your insurance company for massage done in our office. If your insurance does not cover massage, we will make it affordable for you.
